    My favorite BMW

When I was first starting out in the securties business, I really needed a better car. I was 33 at the time and had owned 3 BMWs by then. But I had been stranded with an old Subaru station wagon on its last legs. So the hunt began. I checked the classfied everday with very little luck. Then, after several weeks of looking, a 1970 1600 showed up. I called immediately to get the details. It sounded too good to be true and the price, a nominal $2000. When I showed up to check it out, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked almost new and it was 13 years old at the time. The owner was this fastidious engineer type ( I think he was really a rocket designer for Martin Marietta). Everything was in place. nothing missing. He had even covered every area of carpet with plastic in order to preserve it. Stretched for cash, I asked my cousin to lend me the money and off I went in my 1600. I drove the car for 4 years without really a single issue. It carried me to appointments all over Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. I had owned a 2002 but to tell you the truth, I could not tell much difference in the power between the two. Sadly, I parted with the car, selling it to a friend’s teenage son for more than I paid. He, in turn, drove it for several more years. The simplicity and quality of this car were truly unsurpassed. Oh, if I could only find it again.
